The termite control process

Check out our video with the Bug Doctor explaining the termite treatment process that professional pest control companies follow to ensure a successful treatment

An successful termite treatment has four key elements:

Comprehensive termite inspection . . .

A comprehensive termite inspection by a experienced and fully insured termite inspector is vital to map out the full extent of the infestation, entry points into the building, the species present and any conditions which may have led to the attack.

Eliminate conditions attractive to termites . . .

In addition to dealing with any construction faults, actions to make your home less attractive to termites focus on three areas:

  • Reduce moisture levels around and under your home
  • Remove potential termite food sources around and under your home
  • Make sure areas around and under your home are free from obstructions to allow good air movement and ease of inspection

Termite treatment to eradicate active termites . . .

Termite (white ant) eradication could involve using a termite bait, dust or foam. We will recommended the best product for your situation. All are designed to eliminate white ants from your property and may take a week or two to several months, depending on the nature of the termite problem and the products used. Baiting is the most effective in killing the colony, although it can take longer to work.

Install a termite management system . . .

Once the termites have been eliminated from your Gold Coast home, it is often not possible to confirm the nest has been destroyed (as often it cannot be located). As such, to prevent termites from the same nest returning or termites from other nests moving in, installation of a termite management system is required to provide lasting termite protection. Termite management systems consist of a liquid soil treatment around the property or a termite monitoring and baiting system for ongoing protection.

Termite treatment options

As we are accredited in the use of all the leading termite products, we do not push one particular product. We assess the particular situation at your Gold Coast property via a detailed inspection, take into account any preferences you may have, then make a recommendation on the best treatment. Although we may often recommend Termidor as the best option, often there may be more than one option and in certain situations one product may be better than another.

Eradication of active termites . . .

Although we make every effort to find and destory the nest directly, in many cases this is not possible – often they are well hidden and can be up to 100m away from the house! As such the termite treatment often starts by eliminating the active termite within the building.

Soil treatments with liquid termiticide . . .

Once the termites have been eliminated from your Gold Coast house, it is often not possible to confirm the nest has been destroyed (as often it cannot be located). As such, to prevent termites from the same nest returning or termites from other nests moving in, installation of a termite management system is required to provide lasting termite protection.

The traditional termite management systems is to apply liquid termiticide to soil around and under your house. The older products form a "repellent" barrier around your home to deter termites. Although these tend to be cheaper, termites are very good at detecting gaps (where there is no repellent) in the treated zone.

The newer (and better products) are "non-repellent" products, such as Termidor. The termites do not know they are there and enter the treated zone, where they contact the termiticide and die. Termidor is the gold standard in termite treatments.

In some situations, it may not be possible to treat the soil around the property (too rocky, too steep, etc). In these situations, a termite monitoring and baiting system would be the preferred termite management system.

Termite baiting . . .

Once the termites have been eliminated from your Gold Coast house, it is often not possible to confirm the nest has been destroyed (as often it cannot be located). As such, to prevent termites from the same nest returning or termites from other nests moving in, installation of a termite management system is required to provide lasting termite protection.

Termite monitoring and baiting systems are the "smart" termite management system. Monitoring stations (wood in plastic housing) are discretely placed in the ground at regular intervals around your home. If termites are in the area they will find these monitoring stations before the enter your home.

Regular (2-3 monthly) inspections are required to pick up any termite activity. If activity is detected, termite bait is added to the monitoring station. Termites feed on this bait, taking it back to the nest, where it eliminates the colony in weeks.

Termite treatment costs . . .

Termite treatment costs can vary greatly. The costs to eradicate active termites can depend on the size of the infestation, species of termite present, any construction issues and the products used.

Similarly the costs to install a termite management system will depend on the soil type, size and construction type of the property, and the type of chemical chosen.

Baiting systems are typically quicker and cheaper to install than liquid termite treatments, but this can also vary by property. However, ongoing costs with termite baiting systems tend to be higher with four inspections a year versus one or two inspections per year with a liquid soil treatment.

Whichever system is chosen, it is important to choose the best system for your situation. It is important to choose an experienced, trustworthy pest control company first, so you can discuss openly all the options. We would strongly recommend against phoning around to get the cheapest price. When you are protecting your most valuable asset, you want to be sure you are getting the correct advice and best protection.
